World Navigator is a cruise vessel with hydrojet propulsion (technology initially developed for military vessels). The ship is fitted with two SPJ Pump Jets by SCHOTTEL (model SPJ 82, total power output 670 kW) allowing silent navigation at 5 knots speed (9 kph). This is an alternative propulsion system as the hydrojets are used only in destinations with specific marine life. Both hydrojets pump water to propel the ship and similarly to the in-hull mounted Azipods (underwater azimuthing thrusters) can rotate 360 degrees. They also allow dynamic positioning (via GPS) to stabilize / fix the vessel without using propellers or anchors. The ship's design is based on a Rolls-Royce expedition vessel platform developed by Giuseppe Tringali (Italian naval architect).

While we saw a cooking demonstration here on our Epicurean Expedition, the space really wasn't set up well for everyone in the audience to see. Presentations went better in the Atlas Lounge, also on Deck 4, a spacious bar area that has lots of places to sit and generous bartenders. All in all, we found that the culinary focus did give some structure and consistency to days that otherwise focused on the destination, without any other onboard programming. "I don't want to be nickel and dimed," one passenger told me -- and while Atlas doesn't have some of the extras of a true luxury line like Seabourn or Silversea, you do get quite a bit for what you're paying.
The activity had a thrown-together quality to it -- there was no mirror above the demo table, so most people in the audience couldn't see what was actually going on -- but the duo had enough witty repartee going on that it didn't matter much. Although the World Navigator lacks some of the trendy bells and whistles found on recently launched luxe expedition vessels -- there are no helicopters or submarines -- this 9,930-gross-ton, Polar Category C and Ice Class 1B vessel is, in its own way, a floating jewel.
